KIZ Historical Highlights & Chapter Awards

  • 1980

    Chapter Chartering

    Kappa Iota Zeta Chapter was chartered on September 15, 1980 in Atlanta, Georgia. The eleven charter members were Lacy Alford, Carolyn Austin, Leila Coleman, Haroldine Crowder, Thelma Duncan Lester, Cornelia Glass, Ola Hill, Marynette Lovejoy, Jacqueline Terry, Bettye Shelling and Gwendolyn Wyatt. The first officers were chartered and installed by Evelyn Brown of Epsilon Zeta Chapter.

     

    Miss Blue Revue Pageant

    The first Miss Blue Revue Pageant was held during the 80s and reinstated as a signature program under chapter president Linda Isabel in 1995.

     

    1992

    Hall of Fame Luncheon

    KIZ, along with Epsilon Zeta chapter, formed a joint Hall of Fame for members providing outstanding service to Zeta.  Originally, two members from each chapter were inducted annually and honored at a luncheon.  In recent years, KIZ has become the sole host of a Hall of Fame gala.

     

    1994

    Tea with Z

    Created by chapter president Jacqueline Ward-Williams, Sandra Harris and Erma Killings, the tea pays homage to the life of Zeta member and author Zora Neale Hurston.  

     

    1998

    Stork's Nest Blitz Baby Item Collection Drive

    KIZ member Tonya Cook conceived the idea of hosting an annual baby item collection drive. Held in the community at Mall West End, the Blitz gains greater visibility for the work done by Zeta and the March of Dimes to prevent premature births.  During the 10th anniversary of the Blitz, the Atlanta City Council presented Zeta with a proclamation for their dedication.

     

    Lovejoy Book Scholarship

    Each year, KIZ awards book scholarships to deserving college students.  In 1998, at the suggestion of KIZ member Tecia McKay, the book scholarship was re-named to honor the life of KIZ member Marynette Lovejoy, a respected educator, noted librarian and community activist.  The scholarships are funded by the Miss Blue Revue Pageant.

     

    2000

    First National Officer

    Dr. Yovonda (Deason) Horton was elected to serve as the Graduate to the National Executive Committee in 2000, re-elected in 2002 and appointed to serve as the Georgia State Director.

     

    2004

    100+ members

    KIZ hit a membership milestone during the 2004-2005 sorority year by becoming one of the largest chapters in Zeta with 166 members.  During Tecia (White) McKay's presidency, chapter membership more than doubled and has not fallen below 100 since 2004.

     

    2005

    Kaptivating KIZ Steppers

    A winning, multigenerational step team was formed to represent Zeta in the Atlanta area under the direction of Kendra (Hatcher) King, coordinator and Tecia McKay, chapter president.  In 2008, Lynea Laws, step team chairperson, took the team on the road, performing across the Southeast and Southern regions.  In 2009, the team represented Zeta in the Sprite Step Off television and internet advertisements.

     

    2007

    March of Dimes Grant

    KIZ was awarded $14,000, its largest grant to date, from the March of Dimes under the leadership of KIZ member and nursing professional, Joanne (McDougal) Patterson.  The grant was received to assist in the expansion of the Stork's Nest and Blitz program during Tecia McKay's presidency.

     

    2008

    Chapter of the Year

    Recognized for its zeal and unwavering service to Zeta, KIZ earned the Chapter of the Year award by Zeta's Georgia leadership. Following the 2008 Boule, past KIZ president Tecia McKay was acknowledged by the Kim Sawyer administration to serve as the Southeast Regional Director.  Past KIZ president Bettye Shelling was the first KIZ member to serve as the sorority's Southeast Regional Director in the mid 1990's.

     

    2009

    First National Special Boule

    Under chapter president Vicki Pearson, KIZ participated in the sorority's historical, first National Special Boule 2009.

     

    2010

    An Award Winning Year for KIZ 

    KIZ received several awards at the Southeastern Regional Conference, including the 1st place Membership Award for the largest chapter in the region; 2nd place March For Babies fundraising and 1st place ZHOPE Award for graduate chapters with 50+ members.  Soror Lois McKellar was recognized for raising the largest amount by an individual for the March For Babies campaign and Soror Linda Isabel received the first ever Pacesetters Award for Life Members, which recognized her contributions to the sorority. 

     

    KIZ also received several awards at the State of Georgia Leadership Conference, including 1st place Membership Award for the largest chapter in the state; 1st place Award for Reclamation, 1st place ZHOPE Award for graduate chapters with 50+ members and the 2010 Chapter Of The Year Award for graduate chapter 50+ Members.
